This paper looks at key trends in the concept of the teaching profession and training for the profession. It focuses on the professionalisation of the teaching body and on two basic concepts used to identify the essence of the professionalism of the teacher: the knowledge base for teaching and the professional competence of the teacher. In the context of the professionalisation of teacher education, the author highlights selected questions relating to the definition of the context of specialised professional knowledge and the concept of the processes by which it is mediated to teacher training students. The possibilities and limits of constructivist approaches are indicated, especially as regards the process of influencing the student‘s conT ception of teaching, as well as problems associated with the use of transmissive methods in the teaching of pedagogic and psychological disciplines.
