The study is a summary of information on the goals, strategies ands results of the research programme entitled New Possibilities in Education of Teachers, Educatorsand Pupils for the Learning Society in the 21s1 Century, research no. CEZ: msm- 174500001 under which research on selected questions of teacher training was carried out in the years 1998-2004. In the last ten years there have been major transformations of the concept of teacher training in both the European and national context. We have chosen the term „metamorphosis“ to emphasise the fact that the concept of teacher education is going through fundamental changes that are paradigmatic in character. We tried to answer some selected questions of teacher education in the Czech Republic and at the Faculty of Education at Ostrava University. What is the context in which the concept of the new possibilities of teacher education has crystallised? What do the academics working on the research programme consider to the new target possibilities in teachereducation? What criteria were chosen for classifying the phenomenon into target categories of new possibilities for teacher education ? What new possibilities of teacher education were selected for empirical testing and what methods were used in the testing? What results were achieved? What new possibilities for teacher training for primary education have been put into practice? What evaluation has been made of the new possibilities for teacher education when put into practice from the point of view of the results of the research? Given the limited extent of the study a selective approach to the programme was adopted, focusing on the goals, approaches and results which related to teacher training for primary education and were dealt with by teachers at the department of primary and alternative education. The rest of the results of the research programme are available on the web pages of Ostrava University and the Faculty of Education of Ostrava University in the published final report.
