The articlc presents sources and outcomes of a research project that explored relationships between pupils and teachers focusing on the gender aspcct thereof. The objective of the empirical inquiry was to find out whether pupils have a different notion of a typical woman-teacher. In order to achieve this a questionnaire was developed in which pupils were asked to match selected personal and professional characterisations with male and female teachers. The analysis thereof substantiated that pupils‘ models of manteachers and woman-teachers are rather different, and also that the models presented by boys and girls differ significantly. Woman- teachers are in general observed more critically. The critical attitude prevails among male participants. Assignment of individual characterisation elements sustains the conclusion that pupils perceive and observe male and female teachers through a prism of established gender roles present in society.
