This overview article summarises the results of empirical studies on whether the inclusion of humour in educational communication has an effect on pupils’ learning. Selected research projects are divided into two groups depending on the methodology employed. The first group consists of studies based on questionnaires for students, which consistently show a positive relationship between humour and learning. The second group consists of studies based on experiment: these produce a much more complex and less straightforward picture.
