The concept of quality of teaching is often used as a slogan in various political declarations, but the professional community also suffers from its vagueness as an academic construct. The aim of this article is to help to establish the concept of quality of teaching in domestic scholarly discourse. The author seeks to present and clarify the concept of quality of teaching on a broad interdisciplinary basis. In a historical excursus he shows how different methodological approaches (normative, analytical, empirical) have been used in the definition of the concept of quality of education/teaching in different academic fields (sociology, psychology, education, didactics) and research currents (research into teaching and learning, research on the climate of the class and school, research into the quality of the school). At the end of the article he outlines the prospects for further theoretical and empirical work on the subject (the modelling of quality, analysis of the characteristics establishing quality of teaching).
