The article analyses a common concept of sick, abnormal and generally undesirable social phenomena, i.e. social pathology. One problem with the use of the concept is the way it tends to remove phenomena from the competence of sociology, social pedagogy, and social work and medicalise them (most psychiatry or pathopsychol-ogy). Theories of social deviation involve an almost confusing amount of approaches and their combinations. The statement that some elements of deviant value orientation anticipate the future of society sound very pessimistic. The article analyses a certain specific state of society in which the social standard and law more or less lose their force. Possibilities for the empirical measurement of anomie are presented, and the victory of economics in social system, and pressure on to achieve economic success are suggested as factors.
