The aim of the Inquiry was to find out the specific features of the basic subject matter of a geographical nature and their influence on later formation of geographical concepts in the 5th year. A simultaneous inquiry carried out in the 6th year provided an approximate picture about the actual pupils’ knowledge in geography. It showed how subsidiary, inessential elements suppressed the objective features of the subject matter, still unstable and not properly fixed in memory. Although the results arrived at by the inquiry cannot serve as a basis for broader conclusions, they may be helpful in the evaluation of the subject-matter in Czechoslovak geography in the 4th and the 5th year. In lessons of Czechoslovak geography, beginning with the 3rd and 4th year, it is useful to fix the hitherto vague ideas in order to promote the dynamic development of concepts for a later stage. One must not ignore the fact that the stress on local environment In Czechoslovak geography promotes the emotional relationship of the pupils to their home and thereby enhances the ideological aspect of education.
