The research study is devoted to a concept characterised as the potential self (Markus & Nurius, 1986; Erikson, 2007). The concept has its origin in social cognitive psycho¬logy and is derivedfom self-conception as a dynamic, complex, contextually interactive system that develops. On the basis of analysis of the free responses of 194 students in their second year at the Education Faculty of Masaryk University it was found that when asked about how they see themselves in the role of teacher, students spontaneously incorporate what is known as their potential self in their professional self-conception. The study aims to identify the way in which students at the start ofpre-graduate training think of themselves in the role of the teacher, which of their ideas associated with future development in the profession of teacher they regard as desirable or wanted, or by contrast which they want to avoid.
