A contribution to the discussion on the European dimension of education stemming out of the analysis of the terms Europe, Europeanism and identity. It conceives of the European dimension as one of the principles of the educational system and - at the processual level - as a cultivation of the relation towards Europe. To understand European identity, national identity is significant as its component part. There is no universal model of implementing the European dimension in education - every country creates her own. All share the conception of Europe as a communicative environment for encounters, co-operation and search of common perspectives. Teachers are of crucial significance for the implementation of the European dimension. The project on whose course and results the extract focuses in detail relates to the training of teachers. Implementing the European dimen sion into education requires system changes and represents a task to be dealt with by the entire Czech edaucational community.
