The author gives a brief account of the historical development of the „Maturita“ examinations. The core of the study is then a critical analysis of the proposed reform of these examinations in the Czech republic. It argues that the proposed form of the „Maturita“ examinations and one-sided testing will actually tend to preserve outmoded features of middle-school education. The author draws attention to experience abroad, and emphasises that new approaches to „Maturita“ examinations and their functions must be considered in the context of the whole educational system, from the point of view of the future tasks of education in a rapidly changing society.
