A qualitative inquiry realized by means of essays and their commentaries with teacher students (27 + 30) and by interviews with in-service teachers (4) shows basic "themes" of the teacher profession stressing its ambivalence (un/certainty of acceptance by pupils, closeness vs. distance, tug of war in communication control, creativity vs. imitation in teaching). The way to master this ambivalence is often the imitation of experienced teachers (imitating the "principles" of their work rather than imitating the gesture).
