The contemporary ideological struggle affects ail social sciences. In the field of pedagogy it concentrates, above all, on the question of social relations. The fundamental question of socialist education is the formation of man with the collectivist consciousness and feeling. On the basis of a research carried out by the author in 1980 at all the three types of secondary schools (in Slovakia), he analyses the reasons why a certain section of the youth fails to adopt the Marxist-Leninist world outlook on the level of firm conviction. The system of values adopted by a section of the youth is not always in keeping with the cornerstone of communist morality — collectivism. In concluding the article the author formulates a detailed definition of the term collectivism and shows up the obscurities, some inaccuracies as well as misinterpretations of this term in the educational theory and practice.
