Key words: environmental education, goals, standards, framework education programmes
The article compares concepts of environmental education abroad, in Czechoslovakia and in the Czech Republic from the 1970s to the present. At the same time it presents the new concept of environmental education defined in what are known as the Recommended Expected Outputs for Cross-Section Themes of the Framework Educational Programme for Basic Education, which is the current outcome of the formation of environmental education in the Czech Republic. It compares the current conception of environmental education abroad with the existing definition of the cross-section theme, discusses the differences identified and proposes a way in which the new conception could be further tested from the point of view of effectiveness and usefulness for educational practise.
