The new conception of the teaching of Russian in the Secondary School realizes the principle of bringing school close to life above all in the objective, the content, the organizational forms, the methods and the procedures of work, which are determined from the viewpoint of the requirements and needs of the socialist society and from the viewpoint of the appropriateness to the age characteristics of tlie pupils. In setting forth the objective of the Russian language teaching in the Secondary School stress is laid on the acquisition of the skill to understand the written text as well as the spoken word, and the skill to write and speak independently. Greater concentration on mastering the language skills is also reflected in the delimitation of the content of instruction especially as regards laying down the relation between language skills and language means. What is being suggested is the solution of literary reading, a new system of texbooks, aids, and methodical handbooks. In the new conception a proposal is put forward efen for a new way of assessing the pupils’ knowledge and for handling the School Leaving Examination (i. e. G. C. E. Advanced Level) in such a way as corresponds to the principle of connecting school with life.
