The author reflects on the definitions and conception of the theory of education, which has undergone gradual development since the time of the great 19th-century Czech educationalist Lindner, but has retained a significant and lasting bond to the philosophy of education. The question of the academic profile of the theory of education is still an open one: sometimes it is closer to general pedagogics, sometimes to the philosophy of education, and it has problems when it seeks to present itself as an empirical discipline.
