The author discusses the cognitive, evaluating and prognostic functions of diagnostics in the educational process. She arrives at the conclusion that it is this polyfunctional character of school diagnostics that requires the necessity to solve the question of how significant the individual determinants are in the process, and to try to answer the question of what the teacher is to cognize by means of school diagnostics. Of great importance from the viewpoint of school practice are the methods, form and techniques of school diagnostics that would make it possible to obtain as objective information as possible and to secure a more effective management of the educational process of elementary schools.
