The author investigated the causes of teen-age girls’ flights from their homes. The girls in question were those who were compulsorily confined to a VD department of a hospital because of a suspected venereal disease or for the purpose of a preventive examination. A hundred girls were interviewed and the interviews concentrated on tracing the educational environment and the fates of the patients from their birth until the day they were confined to hospital. The purpose of this was to find out the factors which in the anamnesis prevail as being decisive for their present situation. Interviews with the girls’ parents served as confrontation and supplementation. The girls VD records were provided and their intellect was examined. The patients were under observation during their stay in hospital; they underwent psychotherapy and talks were held with them on various subjects. What came to the forefront was the home environment of the girls. The flights from home were mostly due to unbalanced and disorderly family relationships (48 per cent); to a lesser extent they were due to the temptation of a gang and girl-friends. Sometimes the impulse is the communication that the girls’ parents are not her own. A considerable percentage of all these girls are ill with gonorrhoea. The girls are usually raped on their flight. The first sexual intercourse (as stated by most girls) took place when they were between 15 and 16 years old. This is usually followed by promiscuity. Various gangs provide a substitute for their bad homes. The author further analyses in greater detail the causes that have brought these girls into their present situation and quotes some records of the interviews. She also puts forward suggestions for the adjustment of the given situations.
