(EN) The Development and Function of University Education of Working People in Czechoslovakia

The university education of the working people began to develop with the correspondence courses for teachers at the former Pedagogical Faculties, which were established in 1946. After education of working people has gradually been introduced — in the form of evening courses, correspondence courses and external studies — at most of the universities. Consistent care given by the Communist Party and Government organs to the development of university education of the working people leads, in the late fifties, to consolidating this system of studies, to increasing its significance and function; plans for the future envisage that the studies of the working people will become, in some branches, the prevailing form of university studies. The article, which outlines the main features of the development of university education of the working people and, at the same time, on the basis of various researches, points out some difficulties this form of studies involves, ends by summing up the prospects of the development of university education of the working people (i. e. the form of studies where working people study at the university without interrupting employment). The target is high — in the years 1970 to 1975 approximately one half of the university students are to be those who study while employed.
