The article deals with problems in socio-educational field work with non-organized groups of children and youths. Although they often find themselves in precarious life situations, they generally fail to profit from ordinary social services. They also tend to avoid the cultivating endeavours of schools and schooling institutions. The concept of deinstitutionalization is primarily based on the manner in which social educational field work deals with the needs of target groups and on the way in which the services offered are conceived. This sets the specific professional and general requirements for those working in helping professions.
