Basing the study on the Swedish school system, the author deals with the beginning and development of the communicational conception of mother tongue education in the last thirty years. He presents the sources on which the Swedish professional and public discussion about a new conception of language teaching was based. The ways of gradual development - present and past - of its methodology are also demonstrated. In the last section, the study deals with the present situation of grammar teaching in Swedish schools.
