Key words:
Recent research shows an urgent need of innovations, both in the field of teacher education and civic education. The nature of corresponding changes enables the reform efforts in teacher education and civic education to be mutually supportive and beneficial. In the two fields, common features can be identified, such as open dialogue of teacher education institutions, schools and public, whether it takes place within these groups or among them. Other shared characteristics of the reform are the use of active methods both in schools and teacher education, connection of school and life, reality - and active citizenship - based learning. The article demonstrates concrete possibilities of a connection of the two fields by example of two collaborating institutions - University of California and the Center for Civic Education. Project Citizen of the Center for Civic Education, California, that is being run in the Czech Republic, can be regarded as a model example of this potential.
