Empirical qualitative research on children's understanding of subject matter permits to capture the relative diversity of pupils’ interpretations concerning a particular theme. It is through the use of interview in the phenomenographical context that the authors try to identify the immediate understanding student’s statements enables them to distinguish five qualitatively homogenous types: wrongly structured, dogmatic, naive, acceptable, others. Coherency of statement, its meanigfulness and its relation to scientific interpretation provide a criterion. Quantification of statements revealed a high quotient of students' misconceptions concerning photosynthesis which seems to be a general phenomenon in education.
