The study discusses theoretical and practical aspects of teaching from pictorial material. The theoretical part characterizes terms as pictorial material and visual literacy, gives the history of psychological views on a pupil. Different patterns that try to describe man’s analysing both verbal and non-verbal information are shown there. Syntactic, semantic and pragmatic levels of conveyed information are also noticed. The practical part analyses different functions of pictorial material in didactic texts; correct and incorrect didactic illustrations are demonstrated on examples from textbooks.
