The block of five following contributions consists of smaller studies from members of The Prague Group of School Ethnography. This group is a scientific circle established by several members of the Institute of Educational and Psychological Research of the Faculty of Education and of the Department of Education of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. (Besides the presented authors, Dana Bittnerová, Hana Kasíková and Věra Semerádová are, likewise, members of this group.)
The group works for three years in one field, that is in several state basic schools in one Prague district. The research resultswere published in two publications: "luveni parandum, seni utendum" (Informační bulletin, Supplementum 77, Praha, Pedagogická fakulta 1992), oriented predominantly on the situation of a pupil at the end of basic school; and "Types of Pupils" (Praha, Nadace školní etnografie a kvalitativního výzkumu 1994), following especially the typification of the pupils by the teachers, of the teachers by the pupils and among the pupils themselves.
The data and hypotheses offered by the following contributions are mostly of a level of preliminary findings. Originally they were presented to colleagues in a less elaborated and more brief form as papers read at the I Conference of the Czech Educational Research Association in June 1993.
Naturally, the presented contributions do not offer a complete idea of the variety of themes covered by school ethnography. Neither do they discuss the specificity and function ofthis trend in educational research. Nor do they cover the grand methodological controversies accompanying this trend in scientific literature. Though, the authors do attend to the mentioned issues implicitly or ad hoc in examining the contexts of particular themes. (An article - Orientation of School Ethnography - Pedagogika, 42, 1992, č. 4, s. 455-466 is especially devoted to a number of mentioned questions.)
