The objective of apprentice schooling is the preparation of young people for manual occupations, all-round training of the young person as a member of the working class. Therefore, the characterization of apprentices as a speciacally definite social group cannot be divorced from the characteristics of the working class as a whole. This historical class view makes it possible to characterize apprentices in their general as well as specific features.
The study underlines the objectively given collectivist features of apprentices while pointing out certain features of the opposite character, too. In this context the need is emphasised for an all-round educational influence. The starting point for this is vocational training as the basis for forming collectivism as well as the moulding role of working collectives in factories and other workplaces where the apprentices are being trained. The study also deals with the question of the apprentices’ family background, their sociopolitical activity and some aspects of universality in their education as they are reflected in the process of social maturation.
Even though the study is based on concrete data and knowledge of the educational process, the author does not claim to have made an analysis of the present state of apprentice schooling, nor does he claim to have made a comprehensive analysis of separate problem spheres. The purpose of the analysis of the position of apprentices itself is to help deliberate educational influence exerted in accordance with the law-gowerned historical development. Therefore, it can also be a source of individual suggestions and theoretical starting points for comprehensively carried out investigations that are within the scope of the research activities of educational and political organs.
