The article contains an analysis of the theoretical and practical aspects involved in placing pupils in one of the different types of secondary education (vocational training centres, gymnasiums, i. e. senior secondary schools of an academic type, and secondary vocational schools) in the new conception of our Elementary School and Secondary Schools.
The new educational system in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, which we are now putting into practice, has created new conditions for the transition of pupils to Secondary Schools. After finishing the Elementary School lasting eight years, pupils will continue for another two years at one of the types of Secondary School to complete the compulsory ten-year school attendance introduced by the new Education Act. Together with choosing the type of secondary education on finishing the compulsory school attendance, pupils will also choose a certain field of study or trade at the Secondary School and will concentrate on the area connected with their prospective occupation.
Placing pupils in Secondary Schools is an important part of the complex of problems connected with the educational effect of the school, the family, and the public. It is the culmination of the educational work at the Elementary School including the professional orientation and interests of adolescent pupils. The article lays special stress on pedagogico-psychological and sociological aspects conducive to the study and professional orientation of the pupils, on the role of educational guidance at the Elementary School, on the need to achieve unity of pupils’ interests and orientation with the needs of a Socialist society.
Owing to the new conditions for the transition of pupils to Secondary Schools, and especially, owing to the increased significance of the Elementary School in shaping the pupils’ morally political profile and their study and professional orientation, it is recommended that, unlike the present practice, the transition of pupils to Secondary Schools should be realized without entrance examinations, but on the basis of a general appraisal of each pupil. The article further contains principles set forth for the placing of pupils in Secondary Schools, and a proposal how to proceed in realizing them.
