The starting point is the delimitation of the prospective significance of foreign languages in society, which is a) communication relating to ideological, economic and cultural questions in the period of international negotiations for the maintenance of peace, for the realization of environmental protection on the earth and in space, the elimination of hunger, the provision of energy, the protection of health and all-round development of man, b) formation of personality.
A description is given of the types and organizational forms of acquiring the knowledge of a foreign language, the technique of defining the aims of foreign language teaching and the subject matter corresponding to each of the partial aims is discussed. In the part dealing with material and non-material media, mention is first made of the methods which are the most frequent subject of discussions, stressing the point that the question is not of putting them in contradiction with one another, but of using them where they are justified. The technical didactic media are to be integrated with non-technical ones, which is going to lead to the construction of comprehensive teaching aids. This recommendation is based on the finding that the material base of the teaching process is formed by more information sources than the written text alone.
