The author draws attention to the role of the university teacher in the system of pedagogical work at higher education institutions. He proceeds from the developed socialist society’s present-day needs and requirements for die creation of an integrated system of communist education, for the system of pedagogical work, for its structural components and special features.
Higher education is part of political, cultural and social life. It has specific social functions and tasks which are reflected in what is required of a university teacher’s personality and of the whole system of pedagogical work. The author points out the fact that the system of pedagogical work has conspicuous links not only in the objectives and contents of the study subjects but also in the methods of the teachers’ and students’ work at lectures, seminars, tutorials, in scientific and specialist activities, and last but not least in the ways of checking and evaluating the results attained by students in their studies.
The social position and the basic social roles of the university teacher in the system of communist education are officially given and stricdy defined. His authority is conditioned by his position, by the way he acts or behaves in his roles, by his doing more or less.
Formulation of the main tasks of the university teacher contains the basic requirements resulting from the economic and social needs of a developed socialist society as well as from the requirements of the scientific and technological revolution. The main tasks are in unity with his social position and transform the political, economic and social objectives into objectives of the actual socially useful activities in education, science and research, organization and leadership. Ideological and political, educational, scientific and research tasks as well as cultural communication and organizational control tasks form the basis for concrete realization of the many varied partial tasks of university teachers according to various types of higher education establishments.
The author point out that the university teacher’s personality takes shape and manifests itself in the system of pedagogical work as the integrity of social and biopsychical conditions.
