(EN) Juraj Hronec's Part in the Campaign for the Development of Secondary and Higher Education in Slovakia

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Juraj Hronec, an outstanding Slovalc educationist and mathematician, this article recalls his many-sided public activities striving for the organization and development of secondary and higher education in Slovakia, especially his campaign for the establishment of a Slovak University of Technology, a Faculty of Pedagogy and others.
In another part of die article the author pointed out that as early as the period of the Bourgois Czechoslovak Republic (1918—38) J. Hronec joined those progressive teachers who called for a reform of secondary education in Czechoslovakia. Professor Hronec called for the establishment of a comprehensive secondary school (high school), accessible to all, with the possibility of continuing to study at university without obstacles. He demanded higher education for teachers.
He exerted extraordinary efforts in his campaign for the establishment of a University of Technology in Slovakia, and he was its rector three times. The Slovak University of Technology had been established on 25th June 1937. In 1947—48 he took part in the establishment of the Faculty of Pedagogy and became its first dean. This was an extremely creative period of his work. He gave a lot of thought to the organization of university preparation of teachers, and to pedagogical questions concerning the methods of teaching mathematics; Professor Hronec was awarded many honours and distinctions for his untiring work. In 1929 the State Prize, in 1949 the National Prize, in 1949 a doctor’s degree in pedagogical sciences, an honorary doctor’s degree, in 1955 the Order of Labour, in 1953 the tide of academician, in 1956 a doctor’s degree in physical and mathematical sciences, in 1962 the Comenius medal was awarded to him in memoriam. He had died in 1959.
