The first part of the study proceeds from the concept of effectiveness in the field of learning, teaching and education, and tries to formulate a working definition of effectiveness and a broader taxonomy of its basic components. Then it deals wdth processes on the basis of which effectiveness is usually judged — distinguishing investigating studies, comparative studies and finally analytical ones aimed not only at stating or determining the result but also at discovering the conditions and causes that have led to it In the second part concrete examples are given to describe some methods of ascertaining the effectiveness of learning, teaching and educational ifluences. In conclusion attention is drawn to the considerable difficulty of ascertaining and measuring the effectiveness of learning and teaching accurately and completely, which is conditioned by the enormous complexity of the phenomenon and process in question.
