The school reform in the present stage of the completion of socialism on the road to communism Involves substantial changes in the content of general education at the Basic Nine-Year School. Subject teaching is besides language teaching a substantial component of the system of general education from the 1st to the 5th year.
A deeper didactic differentiation overcomes the older system of subject teaching, which in the spirit of bourgeois ideology was merely a means for the teaching of language practice. The so-called reading with explanation was predom inantly an illustrative aid in language teaching.
The present new curriculum of the Basic Nine-Year School brings with it a relaxation of subject teaching in the sense that it becomes an organic part of the elementary instruction with in the framenwork of the mother tongue in the 1st and 2nd year, in the 3rd year it takes the form of some facts about history, geography and life of the mother country so as to become a preliminary stage of a broader real orientation, which starts from the locality and the neighbouring countryside in the 4th year and leads to lessons on nature and society in the 5th year.
This orientation is the result of the work of the Committee for National Schools, which has also drawn upon the work of our pedagogical theoreticians, especially Academician Chlup, whose hypothesis of basic subject-matter, together with gnoseological analyses of the didactic of the National School, has fruitfully contributed to the present internal structure of the elemantary language as w ell as sbject teaching.
