Taking Universitys extension courses is becoming a current form of education. The author has followed for several terms the studies of non-resident students taking extension courses in physics several terms the studies of non-resident students taking extension courses in physics and he inquires into the causes of failures, whose percentage was considerably higher than with resident students taking a normal course. He has summed up these causes in 11 points, some of which have a more general validity, others concern mainly those who are studying for a teacher’s degree in physics. The author analyses individual causes in detail and makes some suggestions for their removal. Then he draws attention to some measures to be taken to improve the organization and results of extension courses. As the basis of this study has been an inquiry into the attainment of the students of physics, the analysis of the material has resulted in several important conclusions being drawn for the study of physics itself. These conclusions are sunmiarized by the author in the last paragraph.
Extension courses are in a stage of development just now. It is therefore hecessary to gather experiences and on their basis to work out the methods to be used in the extension courses so that they may fulfil their task in the best possible way. For this purpose it is alstf necessary to create favourable external conditions for the students in their places of employment.
