Annotation:
Pestalozzi’s pedagogical and social ideas were well-known among Czech teachers already at a time when Comenius was still generally looked upon only as a religious thinker. This is proved by the fact that in 1848, in the first pedagogical periodical »Posel z Budče« (Messenger from Budec) the interpretation of Pestalozzi’s pedagogy was given more space than the pedagogical ideas of Comenius. This was due to the fact that the Czech teachers found Pestalozzi’s pedagogical philanthropy more timely than the bases of the new bourgeois pedagogy.
In the 1860’s this situation changed when thanks to J. F. Zoubek there appeared in our country scientific Comeniological studies. There was a confrontation of the pedagogical ideas of Pestalozzi with those of Comenius. The national feeling of Czech teachers brings about recession from Pestalozzi’s teaching and greater adherence to the pedagogical ideas of Comenius.
Therefore the most important works of Comenius were published in our country at that time together with the interpretation of his life and work, whereas the literature on Pestalozzi was only fragmentary.
The studies about Pestalozzi’s pedagogy as well as the translations of his works have remained in that stage until today. Only some extracts from his work are available and we miss a complete scientific edition of his works.
Since the beginning of this century a growing need has been felt for a deeper study of Pestalozzi’s pedagogical work, which is an essential pre-requisite for a reappraisal of the bourgeois pedagogy, especially of H erbartism , the influence of which in the Czech lands could not be sufficiently weighed. That is one of the reasons why in practice there still appear survivals of the old pedagogical School.
