The linguistic ability of the child plays an important part in the acquisition of reading. The aim of the study is to show the connections between phonemic awareness and the capacity to lean to read using the Elkonin method of reading. We give an account ofthe psycholinguistic premises ofthe method and the principles of learning implemented in it. We describe the different stages of the pregraphemic and graphemic period of reading practice. In conclusion we assess the efficiency ofthe method for children from the ordinary population and for children with various developmental disorders.
