The teaching plan is the basic directive for the instructional and educational work of the school. It lays down the complex of subjects for a given type of school, the introduction and succession of the subjects in individual classes, the number of lessons per week assigned to each subject and class and the length of the lesson (teaching unit). Together with syllabi it determines the subject-matter and extent of instruction and education which the pupils of a given school are to receive.
The study and analysis of the teaching plans of Czech general educational schools from 1869 to 1954 shows that the teaching plan is conditioned by the task and the organisation of the school, which are determined by the views and interests of the ruling class.
The teaching plans of the general educational schools in the period of the rule of the bourgeoisie distinctly reflect its class character. Pupils of the same age, even in the period of compulsory school attendance and even at the same grade of school receive different education. Consequently, at schools of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade there were simultaneously more than fifteen different teaching plans.
Teaching plans reflect economic and social development. Progressive development of industrial and agricultural production gradually imposes changes also on the teaching plans in all types of general educational schools.
The social system exerts substantial influence on the organisation of the School and its teaching plan.
In the Czechoslovak People's Democratic Republic, more especially after the victory of the working class in 1948, the general educational school system has undergone radical changes in connection with the revolutionary changes in the economic and social structure: inequality, class differentiation and one-sided education has been done away with, and a unified school has been established. This is reflected also in the teaching plan. The unified general educational school has one common and uniform teaching plan, which provides all children with the same pre-requisites for all-round education and equal social status.
