Education at the place of work, as a specific educational social activity, has undergone a rapid development in Czechoslovakia during the last decade. In the course of this development changes have been taking place in the basic strategy of this kind of education and in the tactics derived therefrom of the management of this type of education (both in macro- and micro-social dimensions) and naturally, its social role in the system of lifetime adult education has al90 been changing. The current strategy of the development of the education at the place of work proceeds from the requirement that science be ahead of practice, i. s. that the theory of education at the place of work (pedagogy at the place of work) be ahead of the objective reality, i. e. educational activities in factories and other establishments, e. g. co-operatives, institutes, collective farms, administrative bodies, etc. The research studies and the theoretical investigation of the basic theoretical problems are being realized in the years 1971—1975 according to the research project labelled »Education at the Place of Work« and are included as a component task in the main task of the state plan of the research study of »Adult Pedagogy.« The principal aim of the research activities is the investigation of the substance of the education at the place of work as a relatively independent pedagogical discipline and simultaneously as an applied instrument of modern personnel management in the socialist establishments and other organizations of our socialist society. Within the framework of the »Education at the Place of Work« project a number of partial 'research tasks are being tackled, such as: — social uses of education at the place of work; — the methodology of determining its content; — programmed instruction and learning in education at the place of work; — teaching aids and didactic techniques in adult education in general and in education at the place of work in particular; — typology of the teacher at the place of work; — problem instruction and learning in education at the place of work etc. The theory of education at the place of work (pedagogy at the place of work) is already being included as one of the subjects in the syllabi of a number of universities where there are education and social science courses. »Adult education« is a new field of study which is being further developed and in which the theory of education at the place of work is one of the special subjects. The results of the research studies carried out so far in the field of pedagogy at the place of work have made it possible to open a two-year post-graduate course of »Adult pedagogy with special regard to education at the place of work« as early as the 1971/1972 school year.
