The subject-matter which, in order to he understood, requires experiments to be carried out, objective material to be demonstrated etc., is difficult to programme if a high standard of object teaching is to be preserved. Therefore, we have carried out experiments to verify the didactic efficiency of combining the teacher’s instruction with learners’ own work with a programmed text, which is focused on supplementing, deepening and reinforcing the learners’ knowledge. We have found out that this combination brings significantly better results than the traditional verbal object teaching. In present-day practice the test answer is, in one way or another, included in the programmed text. Our experiments have proved that from the didactic point of view it is more effective to have the learners work with a programmed text without the test answer (but with the test answer being supplied somewhere else outside the text proper and the learner being given an opportunity of checking up on his attainment).
