The article sums up the first results of a research into inter-personal relations in the teaching staff. Three variants of questionnaires elaborated on the basis of the sociometric method were used in the research. The contents of the questionnaires were adapted to the character of the educational work of the teaching staff as a working group. Schools selected for the research included several Basic Nine-Year Schools and former General Secondary Schools each with a different number of teaching staff members. The schools concerned were both in big cities and in villages. The research has shown that it is possible to orientate oneself quite reliably in the informal structure of the teaching staff, to recognize the connections between the informal structure and the formal one, to make their analysis, to see the positions of the individual members of the staff, especially those in the leadership, to find out the core of the staff, to get to know the situation in inter-relationships of staff members etc. The significance of sociometry in the research into personal inter-relationships of the teaching staff as a working group consists in bringing a number of significant socially psychological data. But sociometric investigation covers only a part of the social life of the teaching staff; it is therefore necessary for sociometric data to be supplemented by information gained by other methods. Thereby more complex pre-requisites are created for the use of this information for a more effective leadership of the teaching staff.
