In introduction to this article the author expresses the deep grief shared by Czechoslovak educationists at the sad news of the death of Ladislav Novomesky, who died on 4th September, 1976. This great Slovak poet, journalist and politician was also an outstanding Communist-educationist. He expressed his pedagogical ideas mainly in the 1945—1950 period, while he was Commissioner for Education and Culture in Slovakia. Dealing with pedagogical ideas of Ladislav Novomesky, the author of the article highlights especially his demands for democratisation of education, for preschool education in State institutions, his ideas of a State comprehensive school, his views on school and the teaching profession, on university education of teachers, on higher education, on students’ scholarly work, on co-operation of schools and teachers with youth organisations, on co-operation between school and family in bringing up the youth. At the same time he draws attention to Novomesky’s merits in providing education for other nationalities in Slovakia and points out that this Slovak educationist was very well acquainted with the principles of Socialist school and education. The author of the article highlights Ladislav Novomesky’s share in founding a Slovak theoretical educational journal called ≫Jednotna škola≪ (≫Comprehensive School≪). He also promoted the idea of close co- -operation between Slovak and Czech educationists. The author of the study highly appraises Ladislav Novomesky’s pedagogical legacy contained in the following works: Two Years of Liberated School (1947), Education of a Socialist Generation (1949), New Spirit of a New School (1974).
