The article brings information about a research on the personality of the apprentice which is planned for the 1976—1980 period and is to be carried out by the Research Institute of Vocational Schooling in Prague. The object of the research is the personality of the apprentice developing in the process of vocational training. Industrial training is understood as one of the components of the educational system, a component which is strongly determined by its relation to the field of economics. This is reflected in the special character of all the elements making up this component of the educational system. This specificity must be taken account of in the research on the apprentice’s personality. The research on the apprentice’s personality has been started by a description of the apprentice population. The aim of this description was to show how great were the differences in the apprentices’ capabilities to learn and performances, and to find out which of these differences might influence the process of the apprentice’s personality development. Further planned researches are concerned with the apprentice as the basic element influencing the functioning of the industrial training system on the one hand, and, as a subject being purposefully transformed in the course of his vocational training, on the other hand. The apprentice as an element of the system is being studied in connection with the other elements, with the aim of defining the nature of their functions as well as their inter-relations, which are being formed between them. This area of research also includes research on the employment of young workers and how they are getting on their Jobs. The core of the apprentice’s personality research consists in investigating the processes which, in the source of vocational training, shape the young person into a social type personality. One of the components of the research is to investigate how concrete’ social experience influences the formation of the apprentice’s self-realization. Besides their contribution to the theory of the apprentice’s personality development in the process of vocational training, the researches may contribute to a critical evaluation of the teaching processes results, and consequently to increasing the efficiency of educational faork.
