One of the criteria in judging how after- school educational establishments fulfil their social function and, at the same time, one of the signs of the effectiveness of their educational work, is the Pupils' satisfaction with these establishments, which is reflected, among other things, in the pupils' attendance at these establishments. In the past, organizationally educational measures in the field of educational work in school clubs and similar institutions proceeded mainly from social viewpoints and the requirements of adults; less attention was given to the needs and interests of the children themselves. One of the causes of this state of affairs was the neglect and inadequate development of research of pedagogicosociological and socially psychological character. Bringing into harmony the social interests of adults and those of children in the conditions of work of afterschool educational establishments is important because many children spend their leisure in them at the request of, or by the decision of, their parents while the other children use, their leisure more or less freely according to their own choice, no matter whether they do so in an appropriate way or not. The children attending the above-mentioned educational establishments should find in them a substantial satisfaction of their natural needs, a possibility of realizing their interests as well as space for asserting their activity, initiative and independence: This is what our efforts must lead to. Research into the pupils' attitude to attendance at these establishments may be one of the means of finding out how these educational establishments meet these requirements; it may also point out in what way the work of these establishments must be improved. Such research, some results of which are quoted in the article, was carried out in the years 1962/63 and 1963/64 in 44 first, fourth, seventh and ninth forms of 9 Basic Nine-Year Schools, selected so as to cover large and small towns as well as villages. Research into the selected samples covered approximately 1.450 children. The results arrived at have shown, among other things, that interest (or increased interest) can be seen especially in those places where questions of the work of after-school educational establishments are the concern not only of the supervisory staff, but also of the whole teaching staff of the school, where there are favourable material and spatial conditions for the running of the establishment, where the supervisory staff fully realize that they are organising the children's leisure, bearing in mind the specific features of educational work in these conditions and using non-didactic approach in this work, where they proceed from the children's mental needs and respect them, where the pupils have an opportunity of devoting themselves to their common as well as individual interests and where they can share actively and in a straightforward way in the preparation of programmes and can even take part in the over-all operation of the establishment, and finally where besides organized and collective activities the children also have an opportunity for individual and spontaneous activities.
