Annotation:
The theory of the character-building teaching process was conceived by J. A. Comenius as an inte^ated whole based on a number of starting points. The article analyses only those pedagogical principles which, from the viewpoint of present-day pedagogy, are of greatest importance.
The starting points of Comenius’ pampedia are examined as metatheoretical fundamentals of his descriptive and normative science of teaching everybody, everything and „thoroughly“. Comenius’ laws of shaping human personality are related to the following axioms: development of all people, wholeness and indivisibility of personality, lifelong formation of consciousness.
It was from these positions that Comenius formulated the crucial postulates of his anthropologically-accounted-for theory of education — the axiom of educability (i. e. the capability of each man for being well-bred and educated).
Another point discussed in this article is the significance (for progressive pedagogy) of Comenius’ views concerning development as progressive growth.
