The comprehensive pedagogical research aiming to solve, in the Department Plan of Research in the Field of Education, specific problems of the educational process at the Elementary School, and verifying the new conception of its curriculum, investigates some selected questions resulting from the relationship of the objectives of education and the means of achieving them, especially the subjectmatter and the methods of pedagogical work. It involves examining tlie structure of the objectives of communist education in connection with the formation of the Elementary School pupil’s profile, analysing the structure of the curriculum in connection with research into the relation of the general polytechnical and practical education, analysing the structure of the new conception of the Elementary School’s curriculum content as its first and second stage in general, as well as in individual subjects in particular, keeping a watch on the educational process, and ascertaining the efficiency of the methods and forms of work chosen.
In this research special attention is paid to the realization of the unity of character training and education, especially in classroom instruction as the prevailing organizational form of purposeful communist education of the young generation, not only from the viewpoint of the subjectmatter, but also from the viewpoint of efficient methods and organizational forms shaping the groundwork of pupils’ independence and creativeness, making possible their emotional experiences in the teaching process, leading to collectivism, the training of which is one of the basic aims of communist education. Another point resulting from the research carried out up to now is especially the need to solve problems concerning the selection of essential teaching material, and problems concerned with the realization of inter-subject relationships and contexts as the basic condition for the teacher’s educational work. The research has drawn on the results of theoretical works published in recent years as part of the State Plan of Exploratory Research at the Comenius Pedagogical Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, and it further develops researches of the Department Plan in the field of education and draws on the experience of Soviet pedagogy, especially as regards questions concerning the theory of the curriculum and syllabi.
