(EN) A Contribution to the Problem of Selecting Applicants for Admission to Colleges of Education

The article informs readers about the results of an investigation carried out at the College of Education at Přerov. The investigation took place early in 1970 and was aimed at verifying the students’ motivation for the studies at this type of school, verifying the level of the students’ capacities, and the validity of marking and rating at Elementary Nine-Year Schools, as criteria of selection. The investigated sample consisted of 130 students of that school. The statements concerning the motivation for the studies were analysed as to content and were classified into three categories. The frequency of statements in category III containing answers testifying to minimal motivation greatly exceeds the frequency of answers in category I, which contains answers with the most favourable motivation (table 1). Statistical characteristics of the level of capacities of the investigated sample correspond to an average distribution. This is rather surprising and contrary to expectations, because the College of Education is generally considered to be attractive for students and therefore selective. A markedly positive index of the attractiveness of this school represents the optimal conditions for an objective selection, proceeding from the principles of a positive selection. The mean of marks cannot be considered as a reliable criterion of selection, because the marking and rating at different Elementary Nine-Year Schools are not qualitatively comparable. A complete correlation table of scoring criteria (total weighted score from the intelligence structure test by R. Amthauer, the form-master’s rating and the mean of marks) is given in table 4. In conclusion of the study a draft model is given of the process of selecting applicants, accepting general methodological and psychological requirements of such a process.
