This article is a contribution to the discussion on this subject. It proceeds from the current plastic profile of our uniform school, which, within the scope of its educational tasks is giving, by means of specific institutional forms, special care to backward pupils on the one hand and to exceptionally gifted pupils on the other hand. The latter aspect is found to be lagging behind the former and some of the causes why it is so are pointed out. The main methods and processes used in diagnosticating gifted pupils at Elementary Nine-Year Schools are given in a critical survey. As regards the care for gifted pupils the author stresses the significance of intensifying the teaching process especially for working-class children; she mentions the achievements as well as the difficulties at the Elementary Nine-Year Schools specializing in this problem, and draws attention to the decisive question of concrete realization of this care in setting up schools with all-day care, including the possibilities of »inter-types« taking shape. In conclusion some remarks are made on the problem of accelerating talents with regard to the requirements of mental hygiene and qualitative viewpoints in the development of personality. Care for gifted pupils is to be understood not in isolation or for its own sake, but as an integral part of the whole educational system in which broader psycho-social factors make themselves felt which influence the productivity and profitableness of talented individuals on the one hand, and their optimum self-realization on the other.
