(EN) The First Slovak Workers’ Periodicals Significant Sources of the Beginnings of Slovak Marxist Pedagogy

The author deals with the first Slovak workers periodicals, Nova doba (New Times) and Zora, which were published in Budapest in the years 1897—1899. Nova doba and Zora laid the foundations of the Slovak socialist press, of socialist awareness. They appeared thanks to the close co-operation of Slovak and Czech workers, without any assistance from the leadership of the Social Democratic Party of Hungary. In spite of many negative opportunist and separatist tendencies, which resulted from the ignorance of Marxism-Leninism, the two periodicals provide a significant source for a better understanding of the state of schools and education in Hungary in the nineties of the 19th century. The demands concerning educational policy were formulated with a view to the future of the working class. They were of great importance for the development of the labour movement in general. The educational efforts of the Slovak and Czech socialists must be understood as one of the first ways of forming proletarian consciousness.
