Twenty pupils of a general secondary school aged 17 and 18 were examined during traditional and programmed instruction with regard to reaction time to light stimuli, the measurement of sight fatigue by changes in accommodation and convergence by means of an hour’s panel; the examination also concerned the critical frequency of merging blinks of light. In order to judge the vegetative changes we used the examination by orthostatic and clinostatic reaction. In programmed instruction, which is more demanding for the sight analyser, we found by means of an hour’s panel statistically important deterioration after the fourth hour of instruction compared with the beginning of the first hour. Deterioration also occurred when the other two techniques of examination were used, but it was not statistically significant. When examining the pulse frequency in the lying-down position we observed both in orthostatic and clinostatic reaction a clear fall in the pulse frequency figures during the midday hours no matter whether the instruction given was traditional or programmed instruction. We believe it is caused mainly by the mental fatigue and the biological daily rhythms.
