The problems of educational methods in optional subjects is investigated from the point of view of their function, the significance and the possibilities of optimizing the educational process at the secondary school providing a general education.
In the introductory chapters the author deals with questions concerning the conception of a facultative curriculum in a Socialist school, with the prospects of optional subjects at Senior High School, and with various kinds of theoretical approach to the problems involved in educational methods.
The focal point of the research is in the analysis of the current state of educational work in optional subjects, and in ascertaining the didactic conditions for the realization of the optimum selection and use of educational methods from the viewpoint of fixed educational objectives.
Optional subjects are investigated as a specific form of developing the pupils’ interests and capabilities, and as the preparation for further education or self-education.
Educational methods in optional subjects are, above all, a means of activating the learning process, in classroom instruction. The system of methods is conceived in the horizontal context, i. e. in relation to methods in compulsory subjects, and in the vertical context, i. e. in relation to the system of educational methods if further education, especially in higher education.
The suggested principles of the methods system in optional subjects are a contribution to the didactic theory of the conception of the methods system and they may simultaneously serve as a starting point for their application in pedagogical documents, especially in Senior High School syllabi and in didactic materials for teachers.
